What is your initial reaction to this image? What does this image do in your heart?
I'll be honest, I couldn't be more ready for this election season to be over. My frustration comes not necessarily with the candidates, rather, those who support them. You see, what started at first with differing opinions on platforms and issues has now turned into personal attacks - both from the candidates and supporters. Sadly, I've heard more and more hateful accusations and attacks, not from the candidates, but from people I know and love. This speaks volumes.
Christians, this next part is for you.
So back to my original question: When you see this image, what happens in your heart? When you hear the name Obama or Romney where does your mind go?
If you focus on the guy that you want to win and see him as an answer to our problems - you might be placing your hope in the wrong person. Jesus is who this country needs.
Or do you focus on the opponent, and your mind and heart take a negative turn? (this in my opinion has been the most prevalent.)
This is where I feel like something far more dangerous than opinions and platforms are concerned; Is there anger or bitterness in your heart when it comes to either of the candidates? The bible is explicitly clear when it speaks to Christians about these matters. On the sermon on the mount, Jesus essentially says "if you're angry at someone, you've murdered them!" Bitterness is even serious enough that it warrants stopping worshiping and taking communion to reconcile whatever went wrong.
I'll leave with Paul's exhortation in Eph 4, "Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice. Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you."
Don't let anger or bitterness consume you. Repent. Rejoice that God is still sovereign and that no matter what happens at the end of this election, it isn't surprising to Him.
